Gander, Newfoundland, is a rare example of a town that emerged after its airport. Opened in 1939, the airport played a crucial role in World War II, reportedly becoming the world's largest multinational military base. Immediately after the war, a new town developed, with residents initially living in renovated military structures on airport grounds. source
