GOVERNMENT HOUSE RÉSIDENCE DU LIEUTENANT-GOUVERNEUR
Built between 1827 and 1831 by the Royal Engineers for Sir Thomas Cochrane, this building was the official residence of the governor of Newfoundland until Confederation in 1949, when it became the residence of the lieutenant-governor. Like other government buildings of the era, it is in the Palladian style, characterized by a symmetrical façade with matching wings, evenly spaced windows and a centre hall plan. Its austere appearance is created by its plain, massive stone construction, prominent corner quoins and window surrounds, and large chimneys. Government House retains much of its original furnishing.
Ce bâtiment, construit entre 1827 et 1831 pour Sir Thomas Cochrane, a été la résidence officielle du gouverneur de Terre-Neuve jusqu'à la Confédération en 1949, puis celle du lieutenant-gouverneur. Comme d'autres édifices gouvernementaux de l'époque, il est de style palladien, caractérisé par une façade et des ailes symétriques, des fenêtres à espacement régulier et un hall central. De construction simple et massive, ses grosses cheminées, ses pierres d'angle et ses garnitures de fenêtre proéminentes lui donnent cependant un aspect austère. On y trouve bon nombre de meubles d'époque.
