HONOURING THE BRAVE SEAMEN OF NEWFOUNDLAND.
This tribute recognizes the endless effort and resolute courage of our thousands of Newfoundland Seamen. Beginning in the days of sail, with only primitive navigational aids, their service and sacrifice established our settlements and sustained our trade.
Sailing in our storm-tossed, ice-infested North Atlantic waters, into Europe, the Mediterranean, the Eastern Seaboard, and the Caribbean, our Seamen encountered many dangers and hardships, including the loss of comrades. Exciting adventures, very proud achievements, and joyful homecomings, were also part of their lives. In peacetime, and throughout many wars, our stalwart Seamen have kept our lifelines open for over 400 years.
This tribute expresses the admiration and gratitude of our population, and the tremendous debt we gladly acknowledge to our heroic Seamen.
