Breakwater Books was founded in 1973 by Clyde Rose, Tom Dawe, Al Pittman, Pat Byrne, and Richard Buehler with the express purpose of publishing and promoting the work of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, a population the founders saw as seriously underrepresented in Canadian publishing at the time. The press is widely credited with helping launch a cultural renaissance in the province. Breakwater publishes across all literary genres — fiction, non-fiction, poetry, drama, art, young adult and children's books, alongside cookbooks, guidebooks, and educational resources — with a particular emphasis on Indigenous writers, 2SLGBTQ+ voices, and work from marginalized communities. The press is based at 263 Duckworth Street in St. John's, where it also operates a retail storefront. Source: Breakwater Books About page. source
